Pain Management

How does a Sydney CBD chiropractor treat neck pain?

Neck pain in people who sit at a desk all day rarely comes from a single event. It builds. A screen sitting a few centimetres too low, a chair that puts the head slightly ahead of the shoulders, meetings that run for hours without a break. Seven small vertebrae carry the weight of the skull through all of that, and once one or two stop moving properly, the muscles around them take over the job of holding everything up. Sydney Chiropractic & Massage’s work on neck pain starts with figuring out which segments have seized and which muscles have tightened around them, because those two things need different handling.

Joint adjustment with muscle release

A chiropractor treats neck pain by adjusting the stiff joints and then working the tight muscles around them, usually in the same appointment. Neither part works well on its own. The first visit spends most of its time on assessment rather than treatment. Posture gets checked standing and seated. Rotation and side bending are tested to see where movement stops short. Then comes palpation, pressing along each side of the neck to find where the muscle has gone hard and where a joint feels stuck. Questions follow about sleep position, how the desk is set up, and whether the pain is worse at night or in the afternoon. Two people can walk in describing the same ache and turn out to have quite different problems underneath, and treating them identically tends to help one and not the other.

Neck treatment techniques

  • Stuck segment adjustment – A quick, controlled push on one specific vertebra restores movement that has been missing for weeks. Only that segment gets adjusted. Neighbouring joints that already move fine are left alone, so the correction stays where it is needed and nothing else gets disturbed.
  • Mobilisation for guarded necks – Some necks are too guarded for a firm adjustment. Muscles clamp down and resist. In those cases, the joint gets moved gently and repeatedly through its range until the guarding eases and the segment starts to give, which can take several minutes.
  • Typing muscle release – Deep pressure into the trapezius, the levator scapulae running up the side of the neck, and the small suboccipital muscles under the skull. These are the ones that tighten from typing. If they stay tight after an adjustment, the joint pulls back into restriction within days.

Treatment order within sessions

A neck locked in spasm cannot be adjusted cleanly, so releasing the guarding muscles beforehand lets the joint move with less resistance. On other days, the joint is the main issue, and the muscles are only mildly tight, so adjustment leads, and a shorter release follows. Practitioners tend to move back and forth between the two within one session rather than doing all of one and then all of the other, reading the neck as they go and changing course if something is not responding.

Desk habits after treatment

Most of the week is spent away from the treatment table, and that time decides how well the adjustment holds. Raising the screen to eye level takes the head off the forward lean. Getting up every forty minutes or so gives the neck a break from a fixed position. Chest and upper trapezius stretches done daily counter the pull that hours of typing create, and these small habits usually matter more over a month than any one appointment does.

Neck pain in desk workers responds when the stiff joint and the tight muscle around it are both treated, and when the person changes enough at their desk to stop recreating the problem each day.
